Player Transfers in agreement of CBA, NCBA & MC

Dear Basketball Community,

As many are already aware, our trials are now open for registration.

With the massive growth in interest in these programmes we want to ensure all players, parents, and coaches are fully aware of the eligibility requirements for representing an association, be it CBA, NCBA, MC or any other in Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) competitions. These rules align with BBNZ and FIBA regulations to ensure fairness and consistency in representative basketball, which in turn ensure the best experience for everyone in the basketball community wanting to trial for rep programmes.

Player Eligibility Criteria

  1. Trial & Selection Policy (CBA-Specific)
    • Players may only trial for one association per year (CBA policy) should they want to be selected for a CBA team.
    • Loan or transfer players who have trialed for other associations will only be considered if there are not enough players to fill all available roster spots on a CBA roster AND they have not been selected for the other association they originally trialed (CBA policy).
    • We will be exchanging trial registration lists with NCBA to ensure there are no players trialing for both associations.
  2. Geographical Requirements
    • Players are only eligible to represent CBA if their area of their usual residence is within the CBA zone (The CBA zone is South of the Waimakariri and East of the Rakaia Rivers).
    • Usual residence is determined by the player's home address or the school they are currently enrolled in.
    • If a player is a full-time student at a school or tertiary institution outside of their usual residential area, they may choose to trial for:
      • The association where their school or tertiary institution is located, or
      • The association where their usual home address is located.
    • A full-time student is defined as someone physically attending classes at least four days per week outside their usual residential zone.
    • If a player is eligible for multiple associations due to residence or schooling, they must choose one and cannot transfer for a minimum of two years after they have officially transferred to play for that association.
  3. Transfers & Loan Players
    • Players transferring from another association must submit a formal transfer request approved by both associations and BBNZ.
    • Loan players (maximum of three per team) may be permitted if:
      • They were not selected for their home association's team, or
      • Their home association is not entering a team in the competition.
    • Loan players must be from associations within the same zone (for CBA this is the Mainlands zone, CBA, NCBA, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury West Coast, Buller, Nelson and Marlborough) and require written formal approval via gameday from both associations and BBNZ.
  4. Commitment to Training & Conduct
    • Selected players must commit to all trainings, games, and tournaments.
    • Players must adhere to the BBNZ, CBA and NCBA's Code of Conduct, including fair play, sportsmanship, and compliance with competition rules and behavioural standards at all events..
